Sebi's story

the doctors called a normal healthy baby
boy, if he cried it was only because he
was hungry, tired or wet - the first few
months were a breeze.
By October 07 we noticed diarreah, it
was a matter of concern because it went
for three weeks and after a few days the
fevers started -some high. This went on
for almost two months. He would have a
fever for a couple days then he seemed
to be a bit better (except that he still
had diarrhea and now also a runny nose).
By December it was obvious that
something strange was going on. We
were referred to a GI specialist at
Riley/Clarian North who did blood work
and on that same night (January 4th) we
were admitted in the Riley downtown
ER where hours later he was diagnosed
with bacterial pneumonia.
He was discharged five days later and
sent home on a picc line (an IV that goes
for antibiotics too strong to take orally).
I administered his medicine through this
line (quite a process) for a week and he
seemed to be better except for a little
cough...that turned into viral pneumonia
a week or so later. When he still had
lung issues after that diagnosis, then he
was treated for asthma (I should say that
there were countless doctor and
specialist visits up to this point).
After a few weeks he was not
responding to the medication and day by
day he was eating less and less until it
was only milk...then he slowly stopped
taking even that.
A couple times we were told either it
was a cold (an ER visit) or he needed
more asthma medication (a specialist
visit). At this point I felt helpless - I felt
like I was just watching him
deteriorate...
Fortunately he had a well visit with his
pediatrician a couple of days after his
specialist visit. and Dr. Stephanie
Bergstein, MD also felt concerned. By
then he had dropped to 6% in weight
(basically failure to thrive) and showed
no signs of improvement. That night
March 13th she called Riley North
Children's hospital and Sebastian was
admitted.
